The main objective of this study was to analyze the role of regional narratives in promoting critical reading among rural secondary school students in the department of Santander, specifically at the Jesús León Guerrero and Florentino González de Coromoro schools, and the Encino Agricultural Technical College. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach grounded in the socio-critical paradigm and the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method. This approach allowed for an understanding of students' reading practices and the promotion of contextualized pedagogical transformation processes.
The proposal stemmed from the recognition of regional narratives as a cultural resource that integrates traditions, customs, linguistic expressions, and experiences specific to the region, fostering a closer and more meaningful relationship between students and texts. Data collection involved interviews, field notes, and document analysis, instruments that allowed for the identification of participants' perceptions, experiences, and progress regarding critical reading.
The results showed that incorporating narratives linked to students' sociocultural context increased their interest in reading, strengthened their cultural identity, and fostered the development of analytical, interpretive, and critical reflection skills regarding their reality. Furthermore, greater student participation in the learning process and a positive appreciation of local knowledge within the school setting were observed. It is concluded that the systematic integration of regional narratives into the curriculum is relevant for strengthening critical reading and closing educational gaps in rural contexts.
