Abstract

This article presents findings from a doctoral research study titled "The Six Readings Theory and Critical Reading in Secondary Education: Rural Teachers' Understandings of its Participatory Application at the Jesús León Guerrero, Colegio Técnico Agropecuario, and Colegio Florentino González Educational Institutions in Santander, Colombia." The study was conducted within a qualitative framework using a hermeneutic-interpretive paradigm. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and participant observation. The analysis revealed, among other key conclusions, that teachers view reading competencies not merely as the ability to argue, evaluate, infer, and contrast conventional texts, but also as students' skills in understanding their own environment—a realization that necessitates rethinking the curriculum and better contextualizing it to the realities and challenges of rural Colombia.
